Cinema owners refuse to house Jewish Film Festival in Malmö
The Jewish International Film Festival, JIFF, in Malmö flounders after facing insurmountable obtacles finding a venue for screening it’s program. After being stonewalled by all commercial and art-house cinemas in the city, the festival managed in august to find a theatre willing to house the project. Until the owner of the premises said no. The board of Folkets hus, a nationwide organisation closely associated to the Swedish Labour party, cited safety concerns for it’s staff an audience for refusing to host the jewish film festival.
The board of JIFF sees no other option than to postpone the event, originally scheduled for November 29 to December 2.
For now, we have to take pause to gather strength and start the process of once again find a venue. Meanwhile, it is heartwarming with all support that has been coming the last days and the many people from near and afar who have voiced support for the festival.
We aim to create a forum for discussion, meetings, seminars and films where the audience can meet and reflect on Jewish culture because we strongly believe that it deserves to reach out to a wider audience. Malmö is a city with a vibrant cinema and film festival scene, and Jewish film will of course contribute to this and is something we’d like to contribute to. Behind JIFF is a group of Jewish and non-Jewish film- and other culture professionals from the greater Malmö area. The festival is financed by public and private contributions.
